Jun 2014 Visit to The Welding Institute [TWI] - Lunchtime 12pm

Mon, Jun 16th 2014 at 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Club Visit at TWI Granta Park - booked in advance with Paul.
No Twilight Meeting today.

The tour guides Graham and David made us very welcome and fielded many questions along the way. We split into 2 groups and had a fascinating and comprehensive tour with informed commentary across the extensive site. We saw workshops and laboratories covering micro welding with lasers to massive tube rotary welding for the space and oil industry. The Institute is not just involved in innovative joining techniques but also is used to investigate why welds have failed in high profile events across the world. While health and safety were a high priority we did have amazing access to every area of the plant.

After Roger Wise from TWI came to talk to the club about the amazing concentration of technology on their business park our members were fascinated. In response to this interest a guided visit to the site was arranged, followed by an optional sandwich lunch. We booked in advance through Secretary Paul and shared transport was arranged where possible, parking on site.

Alan Shipp describes his view of the visit -

' On Monday June 16th I experienced one of the most interesting and exciting visits/tours of my entire life.  We, in the Cambridge area, are surrounded by many of the world
