Sir Colin Humphries is the Director of Research in Material Science and Metallurgy at the University of Cambridge.

Sir Colin Humphries gave us a very entertaining and informative talk about the exciting work of his department, at the cutting edge of material science. His particular research interest at the moment is LED [Light Emitting Diode] lighting. He brought several different types of bulb to show us and explained the science behind why he sees LED lighting as the way of the future. His lab has worked out how to use silicon as the basis for their manufacturing process, rather than the artificial sapphire currently used, and is in demand across the world.
