Tools and computers collection

Refurbished tools and computer equipment for Africa

There are two charities we support, in conjunction with St Mary's, Shortlands.  In both cases we collect old or redundant tools and equipment which, after refurbishment, are sent to countries in Africa.

Tools for Self Reliance gives people the skills and tools to get them out of poverty and into work.  Each year TfSR ship tens of thousands of high-quality refurbished tools and sewing machines to their partners in Tanzania, Uganda, Ghana, Zambia, Sierra Leone and Malawi, and pay for much-needed skills training.  Beckenham Rotary and St Mary's collect tools for the charity and deliver them to the local refurbishment centre in Carshalton.  Our last delivery in September 2013 was also our largest and, apart from exotic equipment such as avometers (collectors items!), included: -

  •   6 sewing machines
  • 16 saws
  • 17 hammers
  •   6 braces and hand drills
  • 26 chisels
  • 23 pliers

Computers 4 Africa accept redundant IT, which is refurbished and data-wiped before being sent out to African schools, colleges, and community projects.  A single recycled PC or recycled laptop can impact 24 childrens lives during its first year, offering new hope to break out of the poverty cycle.  2013 has been the first year we have supported this charity and we sent 20 pieces of equipment (laptops, printers, monitors, keyboards) as well as software and instruction manuals to their base in Maidstone.
