6 Rotarians and 3 guests attended the shooting ranges at Minsterley recently and after a brief H & S (please censor this bit before Graham reads it) briefing, which consisted of "I suggest you don't walk in front of a loaded rifle", then we were presented with 2 scenarios. The first was a quite innocuous but large .22 rifle where we needed to be seated with the gun resting on a bipod. The telescopic lens showed the success or otherwise of our efforts and we acquitted ourselves reasonably well on the 50 metre range with the gentle recoil, plus soft popping noise as the bullets were fired, giving us a false sense of security about the next scenario . Peter Hill later took the edge of our satisfaction by advising that the range he was used to was 5OO metres!
Next up was a totally different proposition as we were introduced to the "crowd pleaser". This was a monster being a 1930's vintage Mauser firing .306 shells with a hefty recoil and rather disconcerting habit of spitting a large orange flame on firing, as surplus gunpowder ignited after 2 or 3 rounds. Combine this with a very stiff bolt action, which the world's strongest man would have struggled with and this made for an interesting experience.
Annoyingly, President Stuart and "Wild Bill" Neave peppered the bulls eyes with the rest of us showing mixed results. My target was the only one with a mark of "must try harder!".
Debriefing at The Stipperstones Inn saw our results improving as the pints were imbibed and chip butties consumed. Good fun day!
