90th Anniversary project - Delancey Park Woodland Walk (27 August 2013)

The Rotary Club of Guernsey always had in its mind that following the excellent and highly praised project creating the garden at Delancey which was fully completed 24 months ago, that perhaps a new project could be proposed to tidy up and reinvigorate the remaining area to the East.

With the site now cleared the scope to create a safe and attractive woodland area, with a winding path running from the top of the site and turning both left and right as it followed the natural slope of the site becomes a reality. One path  returns you to the existing garden and the other links to existing paths lower down within the park.

Two new park benches have now been installed and we are waiting for later in the year to plant out the site with natural plants i.e. blue bells etc. and also a selection of appropriate trees and shrubs. The lower level boundary of the site adjacent to the bowling club would be planted with a protective hedge to ensure the club maintained its privacy.

All paths and steps are now installed and the final element to complete the walk, the planting out, is due to take place later in the year as described above, when conditions are right for this type of work. The club will be assisted by "The Men of The Trees" and La Societe with the planting and the provision of the plants and trees we need.

The whole project is designed and managed by Rotarians within the club from initial design through to site development and future maintenance. The whole idea of this scheme is to create a natural looking woodland walk, which if designed and planted correctly, should involve very little ongoing maintenance as you would have in say a standard garden area.

We know from experience that this type of project not only gives the general public a fabulous natural facility within one of its main park lands, but also gains huge publicity for Rotary both at the time of the project and also for years to come.

Funding for this project has been provided by the Rotary Club of Guernsey and also a grant from Rotary District.
