Our club sponsors a Young Carers Group which is run by professional staff of the carers' charity Crossroads and the Portishead Youth Centre.

It provides an opportunity for children and teenagers who are either direct providers of care for members of their family, either parents or siblings, or who have a brother or sister whose physical or learning disabilities mean that they take up the lion's share of their parents' time.

The disabled sibling may suddenly need to be taken to hospital, so no food is available for the young carer. Sometimes the care the young carers provide their parents is more intimate than most people would feel appropriate for a child to give to a parent.

Young carers may get into trouble at school because their homework has not been done because of caring duties or they may skip detention because the person they are caring for needs them home. The young carers' service can help with this.

The group meets fortnightly and provides an opportunity to talk through with professionals any problems which may be worrying the young carer, a meal and just to be a child using the facilities of the Youth Centre for a couple of hours.

Young carers are often extremely sensitive about who knows they are young carers, That is why there are no pictures on this site of our work with them. Sorry!
