Meeting 4th Feruary - The Shaping of Scotland

Weekly Press Report

Seagate Rotary were treated to home grown talent on Monday, when member Donald Menzies gave a talk on the Shaping of Scotland.  This comprehensive overview started with tectonic plate movement, through geological history to the Ice Ages.

Coming to the human era there were henges and brochs, and the start of written history with the Romans, a favourite subject.  Moving rapidly on Donald covered the Wars of Independence, John Knox and the Jacobites, then entered on the industrial age of canals, railways, water supply and heavy industry before finishing in the post industrial era with thoughts on the future.

All of this was illustrated with photos, and made for an entertaining evening as the audience interspersed their own lively interpretations, particularly on recent industrial decline and politics where views are entrenched.  A Vote of Thanks was proposed by Andy Slater.
