5 December 2012 - Emily Toettcher talks about Amersham Museum and the town's history

.

Even though many Rotarians have lived in Amersham for years Emily Toettcher, Curator of the Amersham Museum gave some new perspectives on the town, its origins and its development.

The recorded history of the town dates from the 11th Century. The lands around Amersham belonged to Queen Edith the wife of Edward the Confessor. On her death they reverted to the state, and Sir Geoffrey de Mandeville became the owner. The Earl of Essex, a later landowner, established the Charter Fair every September, and the Tuesday Morning Market in Amersham on the Hill is also one of his legacies.
