Ever willing to try new things (at least from a distance!) and to support other Rotary clubs in their fundraising actibvities, members from our club sponsored members of the Rotary Club of Basildon at their Firewalking event.
On Saturday 15th September, some of us then joined them at Shaw Farm Public House, Old Wickford Road, South Woodham Ferrers to watch this once-in-a-lifetime experience for ourselves.
We were able to enjoy the company of fellow Rotarians (and enjoy an occasional drink) as we watched Rotarians and other sponsored friends of Rotary, walk unharmed across 20 feet of wood embers burning at over 1200 degrees Fahrenheit.
There was no doubting the genuinness of the flames and the heat of the hot embers, a true challenge to the courage of the twenty odd individuals who took part in the actual walk across the fire.
After an initial slow start, a member of the organisers took the first walk, and the the 'volunteers' followed shortly afterwards at small intervals.
To their credit, nobody rushed with undue haste but all steadily crossed the walk of fire with aplomb.
All too soon the event was over, and we repaired to the bar for further sustenance and to share with the walkers their success in completing the challenge.
A great evening, enjoyed by all.
