Quinton gave the club an excellent talk about Cambridge in Roman times.


The speaker who headed the team at the local Cambridgeshire Archaeology department was Quinton Carroll.

Quinton gave the club an excellent talk about Cambridge in Roman times.

He explained that Cambridge was not a particularly important Roman settlement but was at a key crossroads on the route between the important centres of Water Newton and Colchester.

The original Roman site in Cambridge was centred on the current Castle Mount at the top of Castle Hill, it was not very large and the extent of the small town was only to the existing Mount Pleasant roadway. Quinton described the layout of the settlement with the aid of some excellent maps and diagrams. His knowledge on the subject was very impressive and even extended to reciting some old English poetry with reference to the area in perfect diction.

In addition to explaining how the Romans organised their occupation of Britain, the speaker also brought to the meeting a number of artefacts that had been discovered in the Cambridge area. These archaeology finds included some interesting pieces of
