Speaker Michael Bowyer – Aviation Historian and Author - The making of an aviation writer.

Mon, Nov 15th 2010 at 12:00 am - 2:00 am

Michael gave fascinating talk on his early interests in aviation.

The Club thoroughly enjoyed an informal and witty commentary on Michael Bowyer's youth in Cambridge: how he became fascinated as the vast and ill-fated R101 flew over, how after a near-critical illness he took to making model aeroplanes, how he followed the build-up to war and then watched the German bombers filling the sky on the way to Coventry, how he became friends with a young visitor to the house whom he knew just as Frank, till one day he learned his surname --'Whittle'. Later, he took to writing books about aircraft and airfields, writing and selling more than any other British author (with sales of just one book exceeding 700,000). A delightful evening.
