WGC Rotary Centenary Day 2: Knebworth House Tour & Pub Lunch

Day 2 of WGC Rotary’s Centenary weekend saw our French delegates from Luçon enjoy a guided tour of Knebworth House and a classic British pub lunch at the Lytton Arms, ahead of the spectacular evening Centenary Charter Dinner.


History, Hospitality, and Heritage: Day Two of Our Centenary Celebrations

The momentum from our fantastic opening night carried right into Saturday morning, marking day two of the Rotary Club of Welwyn Garden City’s landmark Centenary celebration weekend. With our nine wonderful delegates from our twin club in Luçon, France, fully settled in with their hosts, it was time to showcase some of Hertfordshire’s finest history and heritage.

A Journey Through Time at Knebworth House

The morning began with a trip to the spectacular Knebworth House. The historic manor, famous worldwide for its striking Gothic architecture and legendary rock concerts, provided the perfect setting for a morning of cultural exchange.

Our group of hosts and French visitors was treated to an exclusive guided tour of the great house. We delved deep into the fascinating heritage of the Lytton family, who have resided there since 1490. A particular highlight for everyone was learning about Knebworth’s extensive silver screen resume—hearing about the numerous famous films and television series that have used the house and its stunning grounds as a backdrop over the decades.

Continuing the British Theme at The Lytton Arms

Following the tour, the group moved just down the road to continue the weekend's distinctly British theme. We gathered at the historic Lytton Arms for a traditional English pub lunch.

In total, some 20 people were present, including our nine French delegates, their WGC hosts, and several club members who fancied joining in on the lunchtime fellowship. The atmosphere was buzzing with laughter, cross-channel storytelling, and fantastic food, cementing the strong bonds of international friendship that our twinning relationship represents.

Rested and Ready for "The Big One"

After a busy and thoroughly enjoyable morning of sightseeing and dining, the group returned to Welwyn Garden City in the afternoon. It was a much-needed opportunity for everyone to put their feet up, rest, and freshen up for the absolute pinnacle of our weekend.

With the daytime festivities complete, the stage was set for Saturday night: the grand Centenary Charter Dinner. It promised to be a historic evening of formal dress, speeches, and celebration as we officially marked 100 years of "Service Above Self" in Welwyn Garden City.
