Puzzles

Philip Burley

Kendal Rotary welcomed Philip Burley as speaker on 18th May. He took us back through the history of puzzles, and broke them down into categories. We didn’t attempt the Tower of Hanoi (we’d still have been there) and had no idea why a brandy glass is that shape (we know now). Some sussed the assassin’s teapot and we now know the difference between a maze and a labyrinth. We heard how Betsy Ross, a seamstress, showed George Washington how to create a star shape to adorn the American flag and that folding a map can have infinite possibilities. Each table had a “box of tricks” to round off a thoroughly enjoyable and interesting talk.
