The Rotary Club of Welwyn Garden City is proud to share a heart-warming update on our international outreach efforts. Through a recent donation to the Red Rubber Ball Foundation, our club is directly impacting the future of a determined young student in Kenya named Basil.
Basil is a bright and dedicated student who recently completed his secondary school education. He worked incredibly hard to achieve a ‘C’ grade in his final exams—a solid performance, yet just one step away from the ‘C+’ required to secure a university offer.
Rather than letting his ambition end there, Basil showed remarkable resilience. He expressed a deep desire to re-sit his final year to chase the grade he needs for higher education. However, the financial burden of an extra year of schooling was a significant barrier.
When the Red Rubber Ball Foundation reached out to share Basil’s story, WGC Rotary was honoured to step in. Our donation has ensured that Basil can now complete his final year of secondary school without the fear of being excluded due to fees.
The early results of this support are already coming in, and Basil is proving exactly why he is a deserving recipient of this scholarship. In his most recent Term One report, he was ranked 12th out of 163 students in his year group.
This project is a perfect example of how local Rotary efforts in Welwyn Garden City ripple across the globe. Neil Kirby of the Red Rubber Ball Foundation noted:
"Your donation means that he can now complete the year without fear of being excluded... he remains close and seems determined."
As Rotarians, we believe in the power of education to change lives. We are incredibly proud of Basil’s progress and look forward to receiving further updates as he works towards his university goals.
WGC Rotary continues to support local and international causes that focus on education, health, and community development. If you would like to learn more about our work or how you can get involved, please visit the link below.
