Rotary programmes for students and youth can change the lives of those who participate. Through these programmes, young people can earn scholarships, travel on cultural exchanges, or help a community through a service project.

We encourage all family members to take part in activities and programmes, and specifically offers the chance for young people to develop personal skills and a better awareness of problems that face the world today. This is an opportunity to meet, work and have a great time with like-minded young people, guided and supported by Rotarians

The overall organiser for the District Competitions in District 1320 (Scotland South) is Bill Campbell, District Youth Service Chair (see DMS for contact details).

YOUTH COMPETITIONS

There are three face-to-face competitions in which young people may participate:

Young Chef

Young Musician

YouthSpeaks: A Debate

Young Chef

We believe it is important to encourage and develop creativity in young people and that includes creativity in the kitchen. Cooking amongst young people is a growing interest and a valuable life skill.

Sponsored by Filippo Berio, contestants prepare and present a three-course meal within a pre-set budget and time limit, which is judged by an expert panel.

Young people learn to:

Cook a healthy meal

Develop food presentation skills

Consider food hygiene issues

Develop organisational and planning skills

Develop ability to cope in a demanding situation

The Rotary Young Chef competition is run over the course of a school year, in two or three different heats at club level, district and regional culminating in a national final.

The competition is open to students in full time education aged 11-17.

Young Musician

Music is the international language and Great Britain and Ireland is home to some of the most talented young instrumentalists and vocalists in the world.

We celebrate this talent with a sequence of competitions that offer thousands of young people the chance to demonstrate their musical skills whether classical or modern.

Young people can share their gift of song or mastery of a musical instrument in Rotary’s Young Musician competition.

Participants will get the chance to experience performing on a public stage and receive feedback from experienced judges, plus it offers a great chance for future collaboration with fellow musicians.

Entrants can be either a vocalist or instrumentalist.

The Rotary Young Musician competition is run over the course of a school year, in two or three different heats at club level, district, regional and culminating in the national final which will be held on 29 March 2025..

Youth Speaks: A Debate

This competition is designed to encourage the development of creativity and presentation skills essential to the art of public speaking.

This has been demonstrated by the enthusiasm of students from the many schools who previously have participated in Youth Speaks.  Teams from Youth Organisations should be encouraged to enter.

In teams of three, participants present arguments and points of discussion, before taking questions from the judging panel who are, themselves, skilled orators. Presentations last for 15 minutes.

Participants can select a topic which is important to them, giving them an opportunity to delve deep into research, formulate ideas and build confidence.
