What Is Happening in Rotary Membership?
Dear District 1285 members, for those who do not know me, I am Swati Mukherjee, the District Membership Lead for the 2026-2027 Rotary year. I plan to update you from time to time on how we, as a District, are tackling Rotary Membership.
It goes without saying that Membership is our topmost priority. Over the last 4 years, Rotary GB&I and District 1285 have worked hard to increase and retain membership by introducing Direct Membership and Corporate Membership, and by undertaking digital recruitment campaigns.
Our District has seen a net loss of 39 members at the end of June 2026, compared to 58 at the end of June 2025. We had no club closures at the end of June 2026; this is a positive sign. Could this suggest that we have hit the bottom of the curve and are slowly turning the downward slope?
We cannot stand still, but we all need to work together smartly and actively move everything forward by getting more members to join this wonderful organisation.
Celebrating clubs that ended the year with a gain of three or more new members, like Bolton with Bolton Le Moors, Bramhall & Woodford, Saddleworth, Tameside, Turton, and Warrington, makes us proud and motivated. Recognising these successes encourages others to follow suit.
With an experienced District Membership Team ready to support your club, we can create a meaningful impact together. Reach out to your District 1285 Membership Team 2026-2027 and be part of a shared effort to grow our District.
Rotary GB&I has set our District a target annual growth rate of 0.5%, emphasising the need for active member engagement to reach this goal.
This can be achieved by prioritising and focusing on:
1. Creating modern, vibrant and active clubs that would attract new members.
2. Offering alternatives – Companion Clubs, Satellite Clubs and Passport Clubs.
3. Creating New Clubs including Rotakids, Interact Clubs and Rotaract Clubs.
4. Strengthening collaborative working with local community groups, neighbouring Rotary Clubs and Direct Members.
5. Retaining existing members whilst expanding new members.
6. Enhancing Direct Membership and Corporate Membership
7. Supporting Collaboration and Multidisciplinary Team
The District Membership will organise seminars and open discussion sessions throughout the year. Mark your calendar for August 21st to join us and help shape our membership's future.
The other dates for your diary include:
September 25th, featuring Rotary GB&I Specialist Adviser for Membership, Steve Howe, presenting: How open are your clubs to new ideas, including Companion Clubs and Passport Clubs?
October 9th on Corporate Members, with speakers from other Districts sharing their success stories.
November 21st: a face-to-face New Members Seminar
February 2027 (date to be confirmed): District Membership Summit.
