Growing Well at Tebay Services

Rotary Club of Upper Eden supporting the new Growing Well project

Growing Well Tebay is a partnership project with the Tebay Services owners, the Westmorland Family.  They have provided a rent-free site, funded the site build and horticultural and other infrastructure.  The produce grown at the site is purchased for their Farm Shops and Kitchens. Funding of £180,000 from the National Lottery Community Fund was secured to support running costs during the first two years.

Tebay Services freshly picked salad and other vegetables are prepared, cooked and served to services customers every day, just a few hundred metres from where they are grown.

The site was short of outdoor communal facilities and compost bins, and this is where members of Rotary in Upper Eden have helped. Following a site survey a suitable area was identified and plans drawn up for the following based upon the Club providing the manpower and covering the cost of the materials:

  • 4 Large concrete compost bins complete with roofs
  • 1 Outdoor seating booth
  • 1 large outdoor communal table (approx. 18 seats)
  • Various tables and seats
  • Numerous planters to mark the perimeter of the communal area constructed from pallet

Members began the project towards the end of May 2024 and it was completed early in 2025.  It took 306 volunteer hours involving 18 individuals comprising 14 members from Upper Eden, 2 members from Appleby Club and 2 friends. The project came within budget which was supported on a 50/50 basis from The Rotary Foundation via our District.  For further details contact Upper Eden Rotary Club – see Clubs page for their website details.
