The Rotary Foundation is a global charity that helps Rotarians around the world fund their projects locally, nationally and internationally. The following are recent examples of grants obtained by Rotary Clubs in Cumbria & Lancashire, in some cases working with other Rotary Clubs at home and abroad.
District Grants
Garstang & Over Wyre Rotary have had a long relationship with the Garstang Guides and Scouts. Following COVID the Rotary Club was granted a Rotary Foundation District Grant which along with a club contribution provided £1,000 to help towards the completion of a new roof for their hut. The water tight hut can now be leased to third parties for the first time. Rotarians are sponsoring the establishment of a Garstang based Men’s Shed and are hoping to be the first tenants in a building which until now is an under used community asset.

Lancaster Loyne Rotary began their multi year Club Foot project in India during the lockdown of 2020, with 2025 being their final year. The affected children are treated in Safdarjung Hospital in South Delhi, India. The club raises over £1500 annually and this has been supplemented by an annual £1500 District Grant which supports the treatment of 30 individual children each year. The project is managed with the support of Rotarians in New Delhi and CURE International India Trust.
Children from every religion and caste are treated, although India is predominantly Hindu. Without this support these children from very poor families, would be left with twisted feet, and would be unable to walk or gain employment as adults. The treatment involves the use of adjustable leg braces, which are made from recycled leather and metal, by ex-polio sufferers.
Kendal Rotary have supported a charity in South Africa which supplies wheelchairs to children with cerebral palsy in remote regions of the country. This has been achieved through cooperation with the Rotary club of Rosebank, Johannesburg. Their members fund raise for the charity, which is called Boikanyo, and get involved with regular trips to the remote regions, in order to help identify and meet the children’s needs.

The link with Rosebank is well established, going back 20 years. Our District agreed to a special District Foundation grant in 2023 of £1000, which was donated to Boikanyo. In addition, Kendal has raised additional funds, including from a recent concert, which is in the region of £800. Kendal Rotary continues to build on their links with Rosebank clubs. Zoom based quizzes have been held between the clubs, most recently involving a club in Botswana.
Part of Global Grants
In the past Global Grants have also been granted to clubs in Cumbria & Lancashire. These are a minimum of US$30,000.
Brampton & Longtown Rotary became the international partner in a Global Grant obtained by Rotarians in Mali who were in the first phase of providing a thousand public toilets throughout West Africa. For the first pilot phase of the toilet project, Rotarians in Mali sought over US$40,000. Brampton & Longtown Rotary obtained a Foundation Grant of US$5000 from our District which along with funds obtained by Rotary in Mali and a Rotary Foundation Matching Grant ensured that the full cost of this phase of the project has provided for the first twelve new public toilets in Bamako.
