Cockermouth Rotary were keen to introduce the idea of Incredible Edible to their area. Incredible Edible is a worldwide project which was started in Todmorden in 2008, where volunteers enhanced areas of the town whilst introducing residents to the opportunity of growing their own fruit and vegetables.
The Incredible Edible vision is to create kind, confident and connected communities through the power of food.
This new initiative can go some way to encouraging people in the Cockermouth area to consider how they can help themselves and the wider community to have access to locally grown, readily available food, and people have been encouraged to help themselves.
To get Incredible Edibles Cockermouth started they obtained a grant from The Rotary Foundation.
Their first project, which was funded by the local Lakes Homecenter, has resulted in the planting of ten assorted fruit trees in Harris Park. The Club members obtained permission before beginning , and are now reporting that the fruit trees are thriving and hopefully enabling the locals to help themselves to the fruits.
Following on from the success of Harris Park they planted an assortment of herbs at the Old Bandstand. Labels suggesting what to use the herbs for were added.
More planting sites followed with permissions being given. The Rotary members planted ten more assorted fruit trees in a different area of Harris Park, including some miniature ones for youngsters to pick. More herbs were planted in a bed on Main Street. Three wooden vegetable planters plus compost and baby plants were donated to the local school for special needs.
Some of the Cockermouth Rotarians had some land by the river, and club members planted two fruit trees and put up vegetable planters. Notices were added saying "Help yourself" - and people did!
Incredible Edibles Cockermouth is continuing to expand and their next project is with a local church where children will be planting more ‘Incredible Edibles’.
