Protecting our common legacy: the environment.

In 2021 the Environment became Rotary’s 7th Area of Focus.  Rotary is committed to supporting activities that strengthen the conservation and protection of natural resources, advance ecological sustainability, and foster harmony between communities and the environment.

There are clear indications of environmental deterioration, associated with the global population approaching 8 billion.  As a global group of problem solvers, with diversified talents and wide ranging skills, this  focus goes hand in hand with Rotary providing more ways to make a positive change.

How Rotary can help protect our planet

The Rotary Foundation will enable our members and their community allies to take action in these ways:

  • Protecting and restoring land, coastal, marine, and freshwater resources
  • Enhancing the capacity of communities to support natural resource management and conservation
  • Supporting sustainable agriculture, fishing, and aquaculture practices
  • Addressing the cause of climate change by reducing the emission of greenhouse gases
  • Strengthening ecosystems and communities affected by climate change
  • Supporting education initiatives that promote behaviour that protects the environment
  • Advocating for sustainable consumption to build an economy that uses resources more efficiently
  • Addressing environmental justice issues and public health concerns

Rotary in Cumbria & Lancashire is collecting information from Clubs  already involved in an Environmental activity, to assist others considering what they can do to help.   As a result we have produced a three page guide with links to external websites where you can access further information.  District 1190 Environment Guide.  Examples of club projects will be added to pages that will show at the right of, or below this page.
