Rotary Junior Community Awards

What is it?

The Rotary Junior Community Award (RJCA) is a non competitive year long award for children in the final year of Junior school, ie children who are 10/11 yrs of age. All who complete the award will receive, at a specially arranged awards ceremony, a certificate and community champion badge. It is open to all children to take part in but is of particular benefit to those children who may be disadvantaged in some way.

How is it organised?

It is organised by the sponsoring Rotary club, undertaken by the children and their families and supervised by the school.  It is not a school club activity. The sponsoring Rotary club provides all the materials and advice where necessary and looks at the diaries and other materials produced by the children in June and arranges the award ceremony.

Diaries, handbook, badge and certificates (with help when needed are all available from the Rotary District, via the Rotary club of Camberley).

Benefits to the children doing the award

• It gives them an opportunity to see and experience the range of cultures in their community
• They can participate in meetings and other social activities which they otherwise would not.
• They will learn new skills and work on improving existing skills ,thus helping to improve their physical, mental and emotional health.
• It encourages pro-social behaviour
• It increases self confidence and self worth.
• It encourages activities which are not virtual and IT based.
• Amongst them are the possibly lost leaders of tomorrow.

What is involved?

To gain the award children to have completed 

• 10hrs of community service,
• a minimum of 3 of 5 suggested areas of social experiences
• 10 hrs minimum on improving an existing physical skill
• 10hrs minimum developing a new skill

Guidance for how to do the award is given to each child in a diary which has to be signed on a weekly basis as different units of the award are undertaken. There is a guidance handbook for each school and for the sponsoring Rotary club.
