How many Scholars are there?

The Rotary Foundation awards about 300 scholarships for postgraduates each year, who study overseas, and follow a subject that addresses one of the Seven Rotary focusses.

Godparenting

Rotary in Thames Valley hosts about 30 of these scholars each year; we are helping our fellow Rotarians around the world who send them, as well as helping the youngsters. The D1090 clubs that ‘godparent’ these young people often say what a privilege it is to be involved with them while they are with us, helping them on arrival to settle into their colleges, showing them a bit of English culture, often making friends for life.

The Focus of studies

The focus of their studies is fascinating, yes they are in an academic environment, but some of the objectives are very practical:

Helping to defuse conflict, finding solutions for remote groups to be self-sustaining in growing food, protecting vulnerable women, researching medical solutions, designing policies to disincentive the co-optation of minors in organized crime, find ways to reduce gun crime, sustainable energy in Nigeria, ….

Six Zoom events to meet the Scholars

Six clubs in D1090, who are closely involved with hosting (or godparenting as I call it) are staging an evening (75 minutes) when you can ‘Meet’ four or five scholars, who will tell us what they are doing, and how the award they have been given will benefit those less fortunate than ourselves, and so meet the Rotary objectives.
