Howden Rotary Supports SHAKE (RCC)

SHAKE Howden have purchased a series of British Sign Language each carefully designed to encourage sign language comprehension amongst deaf and hearing children alike

SHAKE Howden have purchased a series of British Sign Language each carefully designed to encourage sign language comprehension amongst deaf and hearing children alike each beautifully illustrated and intended to engage children from Early Years Foundation Stage, through primary years and beyond.

“We are really proud to have been able to fund a series of British Sign Language boards which have now been put in Howden, a massive thanks to Parkin Family Butchers and the members of the community that have donated towards these boards as well as our fund raising” said SHAKE’s Sophie Ross-Briggs “They are in place in Howden Infants, Howden Juniors, Howden Minster, Co-Op Park and outside Howden Pre School and we plan to move them about so people can see and learn from as many signs as possible.”

Sophie spoke to a mum in Howden whose daughter uses BSL as her primary method of communication who told me her daughter was 'really fascinated and cannot wait to go see them all' another local mum whose daughter is profoundly deaf and uses BSL to communicate said 'The boards provide access to British Sign language, the primary language of the Deaf community. Having boards like this around the community provides a fun way for children and adults alike to learn basic BSL to enable them to communicate with the deaf community, thus breaking down communication barriers and providing inclusivity.'

The attached image shows the BSL signs located around Howden.
