Rotary Club of Sowerby Bridge’s own “Captain Tom”

Rotary Club of Sowerby Bridge took up the Voluntary Action Calderdale Challenge to Move, Walk, Cycle or run the Calderdale Way. Each team collectively had to move, walk, cycle or run the equivalent 50 mile distance of the Calderdale Way.

The organisation would receive £20 per member if they collectively achieved the set distance.

The Rotary Club embraced this challenge with our very own Captain Tom, alias Rotarian Derek Rollinson, who could be seen each day during the period of the challenge (1st to 30th September) pushing his trusted buggy up and down the short lane outside his house in Ripponden.  Derek managed to clock up 30.2 miles over the month, a fantastic achievement as Derek has been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, hence the four wheeled walking aid, to help maintain mobility.

Derek, along with 24 other Members of The Rotary Club of Sowerby Bridge, friends and family members, succeeding in the “Move the Calderdale Way” challenge and Team Rotary we smashed the 50 mile target with a total of 1663.4 miles achieved over the month!

Derek believes passionately in the ethos of Rotary and is committed to helping The Rotary Club of Sowerby Bridge achieve its vision which is to see a world where people unite and create lasting change across the globe in our community and in ourselves and to strengthen the Club by maximising our impact in the local community, nationally and internationally.
