World Polio Day is a time for Rotary members and clubs to renew commitment to End Polio Now

Taking place on 24th October every year, World Polio Day is a moment for Rotary members and clubs to come together and renew our commitment to End Polio Now.

Eradicating polio remains within our reach, but getting over the finish line requires determination, resources and continued action. After decades of progress, we cannot afford to stop short.

In a changing world, every effort counts. Together, we can help make polio the second human disease in history to be eradicated.

This autumn, communities across Great Britain and Ireland have three highly visible ways to support the effort to end polio: plant purple crocuses, Walk a Mile for Polio or illuminate a local landmark.

Each activity is simple, but together they can raise awareness and generate vital funds.

Rotary clubs and members can lead the way, but schools, youth groups, community organisations, businesses, families and individuals are also encouraged to take part.

Plant

Purple crocuses have become one of the most recognisable symbols of Rotary’s campaign to end polio.

Their colour represents the purple dye used to mark a child’s little finger after vaccination.

The deadline for orders through Rotary GB&I has now passed, with over 1 million crocus corms being delivered for Rotary clubs, members and community organisations during September and October. Now is the time to organise your planting activities for on or around World Polio Day.

Walk

On or around World Polio Day, individuals, clubs and communities are encouraged to Walk a Mile for Polio.

It is an activity almost anyone can join. Rotarians, Rotaractors, Interactors, RotaKids, families, friends, schools and community groups can walk together, raise awareness and show their support for a polio-free world.

Each walker is encouraged to give a donation or gain sponsorship to raise funds.

Shine

Does your village, town or city have a well-known building, bridge, monument or landmark?

Illuminating a landmark creates a striking public reminder of Rotary’s End Polio Now campaign. It can prompt questions, start conversations and provide memorable images for newspapers, television, websites and social media.

Global impact - Show the world Rotary’s impact by registering your activities* on World Polio Day via the End Polio Now website. Also let us know what you’re doing by emailing pr@rotarygbi.org.
Recruit volunteer support - List your event on the Rotary GB&I Impact Portal to advertise your opportunity to other Rotary members in your area.
Download materials - Digital materials are available from the Rotary International Brand Centre, with print materials available from the Rotary GB&I online shop and more items from the Rotary Club of Guernsey’s End Polio Now Shop. Whether you’re hosting an event, or want to make a splash on social media, there’s a huge range of items for download.
