ENVIRONMENT AND VOCATION TEAM 2025/2026

Projects Ongoing

• Rotary Peace Garden

To continue the past work of developing the garden, with occasional tidy ups and    pruning   of the beds to maintain its appearance. Keep paving weeds under control. (Helmut)       

  Use the garden to mark special events during the year e.g., end polio, remembrance day.

• Ashby Hood Park Area                                                                                                                                 Continue with regular Monday litter picking which improves habitat for wildlife and the appearance of the park for the public to enjoy. Participate in the Gilwiskaw Brook tidy up and Green Flag Award project (Roger/Bob) Refresh paths and other areas near college.  Monitor water quality and register with a national scheme.

* Wilding Gardens and other Green spaces

   Continue to encourage club members to set aside part of their garden for wilding to 

   attract bees, butterflies and other wildlife.  Participate in species counts such as the 

   annual RSPB bird survey and butterfly audit.  

• Climate Change                                                                                                            
• Encourage club members to try to mitigate effects of climate change e.g., participate in another district organised Treekly Challenge in March 2026, and to help members. 

continue to be aware of their own carbon footprint e.g., by having a speaker give a talk on the environment at the club.

* Recycling                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         

   Encourage recycling in the club, e.g., soft plastics.

• District                                                                                                                           
• Follow or engage with other initiatives from the District e.g., publicise talks, join 1070 environment Whats app group.

• Vocational                                                                                                                         Participate with other club groups on Vocational Projects such as walking, visits.

  Have weekend activities to include those who are working or busy in the week.

New ideas

•  Develop and set up a weather station online to help members save energy (Alan)

•  Investigate attending Heartwood woodland management activities such as making bird boxes and Christmas crafts. (BobC)

* Work with local schools on joint environment projects e.g., rain chains. Having fun.

•  Meet up with Env enthusiasts in area e.g., Karen’s contact in Moira, Bill Piper (BobC/Karen)

• Environmental walk using one of Hugh’s regular group walks combined with our own birdwatch. (Ray/Bob)

• Environmental Awareness Event in Ashby e.g., District Tree Planting (Ray/Bob)
