Honouring a Legacy: The John Howells Memorial Prize
A Lasting Tribute to Dedication and Student Excellence
President Martyn and Rotarian John had the privilege of presenting the John Howells Memorial Prize, accompanied by a certificate and a financial donation, to this year’s deserving winner. This award stands as a testament to our club’s enduring relationship with the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences, as well as to the remarkable legacy of the late John Howells.
For many years, while John Howells was an active member, we collected spectacles from opticians throughout the Rhondda valley and shipped them to the school for use in their training courses. John’s dedicated involvement made this initiative possible, directly supporting the education and practical development of countless future optometrists.
After John’s passing, and in recognition of his unwavering commitment, we established the annual John Howells Memorial Prize to honour his legacy and continued support of the school. John was deeply committed to supporting students’ education, and his legacy lives on through this prize, which motivates future optometrists to excel.
The school has expressed their appreciation for this ongoing support:
“The Rhondda Rotary Club very generously support our Foundation year students by offering a prize for the highest mark in OP0205 Introductory Optometry (to include a mark of 100% in the logbook).”
