Recently the rotary club learned of the work done by Mel and Mike Davies in raising funds during the past twenty years to create the proposed Rehabilitation Centre. Sadly for Mel, at the age of 15, she suffered a major spinal injury in a road traffic accident at Aberavon. She became paralysed from the waist down and has been confined to a wheelchair ever since. She has written a book titled “Never Say Die” and her royalties are donated to the Treat Trust. She became the founder of TREAT WALES which has notable trustees of the registered charity such as Paul Thorburn (Chairman), Meyrick Sheen (father of Michael Sheen) together with Patrons such as Max Boyce, Baroness Tanni Grey Thomson, Michael Sheen, Jonathan Davies OBE and of course celebrity tenor Paul Potts.
Land has already been acquired at Morriston for a multi-million pound state of the art rehabilitee facility. One already exists in England at the Aspire Centre, Stanmore, Middlesex, but there is nothing like it Wales. This will be a first. More information can be found on the website www.treattrust.org.uk Mel was honoured to be Olympic torchbearer No.123 in Swansea on 26th May 2012.
The TREAT building will have accessible modern equipment in a friendly interactive gymnasium and also a heated ramped-access swimming pool together with alternative therapies including music & arts therapy. TREAT will provide a welcoming atmosphere with supportive and professional staff on hand to deliver a world class centre of excellence in rehabilitation and recovery.
