At the fourth annual Welsh Dragon Boat Championship held at Llysyfran Reservoir and Country park on Sunday 28th May spectators saw an unbelievable spectacle. For the past three years The “Hill Billies” from Narberth Rugby Club had always beaten a Team from Narberth’s Eagle Inn.
This year was different.
In a thrilling closely fought final race The Eagle Team called “Full Bore” shot past The “Hill Billies” in a magnificent time of 51.34 Seconds. The gap was an incredible 0.09 seconds with the third team Valero Vikings finishing in a decent time of 53.59 seconds.
Hundreds of cars packed the field car parks at this scenic tourist centre courtesy of neighbouring Farmer Nigel and rotary club are grateful to Welsh Water for granting a licence to use the reservoir for this classic popular event. The banks of the reservoir were adorned with gazebos for the teams and hundreds of adults with children free to roam in this beautiful setting.
The major sponsor Hywel Griffiths & Sons provided novel entertainment for children. They were allowed to sit in a mini digger and use the controls to play a giant game of skittles using a weighted chain to knock over the pins. The co-ordinator for the event Ken Morgan said: “we are delighted that sponsors such as Care in Hand, Rush Acre Garage and Folly Farm have continued to support us with financial aid. Without their help we could not possibly afford to stage this event” All of the children’s’ entertainment including , Bouncy Castle, inflatable dome, tea cup rides, mini disco, magician and face painting were absolutely free of charge.
In summing up the event at the end of the races President Mary Adams thanks all of the competitors who had jointly raised £750 per boat and the paying adults who had each paid £3 for entry to the park. The weather was superb making this a memorable occasion and the Rotary Club is hoping to maintain this annual event but it does rely on continuing support of sponsors, advertisers and competitive teams.
