Ms Fiona Greville, Headteacher of Llantwit Major Comprehensive School visited our weekly meeting to talk about the many initiatives by which the Club  assists the school.  These include the Young Chef competition in which the growing number of students interested in food preparation can demonstrate their skills; Dragons Den a competition open to budding entrepreneurs with a cash prize of £250 and the popular Interact Club open to senior pupils who do much to raise funds and awareness of those needing help in the community.  This year the school also hopes to enter students in the Young Musician competition and the Rotary Youth Leadership Award the latter for those interested in outward bound adventures.

Rotary members were also told about the school’s Breakfast Club.  On a daily basis this caters for between thirty and forty children from years seven to thirteen who have left home that morning without having breakfast. This ensures that all pupils are ready fully to participate in the normal rigours of the school day and ultimately be part of the school’s growing success.  Llantwit Major School has a capacity of 1050 pupils and thanks to recent excellent examination and inspection results is operating at capacity;  there is now a waiting list for prospective students. Unlike most secondary schools in the area virtually all their students come from the local catchment area.  President Anthony congratulated the Headteacher on the school’s outstanding results and said that Rotary was proud to be associated with that success.

Ian Hunt of Filco Stores was also at the meeting and was able to update the Club on the recent steps to re-establish the important local Chamber of Trade.  This organisation is open to all shop keepers and traders in the area and seeks to strengthen their work in offering good local facilities to the people of Llantwit Major and surrounding Vale. He also congratulated the school on its growing achievements and was pleased to have been able to offer support to this important community asset.
