The District Final of the Young Musician Vocal and Instrumental competitions took place at Cowbridge Comprehensive School on Saturday March 21st 2015.
The afternoon saw eight vocal competitors, one from each area in District 1150, perform to an exceptionally high standard. The audience were treated to wide range of contrasting music from musical theatre to classical and operatic. These eight young ladies certainly gave the adjudicating team of William Lambert, Craig Jones and Jack Mainwaring a difficult task when it came to making a decision.
The winner was Verity-Belle Atkinson sponsored by the Rotary Club of Llantwit Major and runner up Antonia Clarke sponsored by the Rotary Club of Cardiff east
The Instrumental competition in the evening was again a great delight for the audience. The competition included two flautists, two clarinettists, a percussionist, a guitarist and a cellist and a pianist. As the chair of the adjudication noted in her feedback, this evening was more like a top class concert than a competition. All the competitors played with great skill and confidence, much beyond their young ages, and were praised for their individual performances. The three adjudicators were Heidi de Gruchy, Cheryl Robson and Nigel Jones.
The winner was the twelve year old cellist Paul Dugdale sponsored by the Rotary Club of Newport St Woolos and runner up was flautist Molly Bradley sponsored by the Rotary Club of Abergavenny.
The two winners will go on to the Regional final being held in Bristol Grammar School on April 19th starting at 2pm.
The organisers would like to thank the Headteacher and staff at Cowbridge Comprehensive School for their support, Mrs Sian Mainwaring and members of the Rotary Club of Cowbridge for organising refreshments and all the members of the public and fellow Rotarians who attended this outstanding competition.
