Following their success in the club round of the Rotary Young Musician competition, 3 local young people progressed to the area final of the competition which was held in Cefn Saeson Comprehensive School in Neath on 26th January. Two out of the four instrumentalists competing were our harpists Ioan Wardhaugh and Caitlin Morris who attend Cowbridge Comprehensive School and Ysgol Iolo Morgannwg, respectively. In the vocalist section of the competition Verity-Belle Atkinson from Cowbridge Comprehensive School was our representative from a total of 5 competitors.
In the instrumentalist section Caitlin, who is 10 years of age, was awarded runner up playing pieces by J. C. Bach and Felix Godefroid. Ioan played pieces by Handel and Kim Robertson. The winner of the instrumentalist section was a clarinetist from Cwmtawe Community School. Our vocalist Verity-Belle won the first place with 3 very contrasting songs from the classical, musical theatre and light genres. Her last piece was "The Girl in 14g" which gave Verity-Belle ample scope to show her vocal and dramatic flare.
Verity-Belle will go on to represent Llantwit Major and Cowbridge Rotary clubs in the District 1150 final which will be held on Saturday 21st March in Cowbridge Comprehensive School.
