Young Musician (Instrumentalist) Competition

Thu, Oct 9th 2014 at 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Another excellent competition showcasing the talent of local young people.

Cowbridge School played host to the annual Rotary Young Musician (Instrumentalist) competition on the evening of Thursday 9th October. As usual there was a very strong field of competitors, all of whom were drawn from local schools in the Western Vale. The competition was sponsored by Llantwit Major Rotary club and has been running in its current form for 8 or 9 years. Matthew Upcott (Cowbridge School) played 2 clarinet studies by Iwan Miller and James Rae. Pianist Rhys Richards from Llantwit Major School played the Andante from Beethoven's Sonata in G followed by Allegro by Lennox Berkeley. There have been very few brass instrumentalists over the years in this competition, but that omission was rectified by trumpeter Michael Hain (Cowbridge School) who played Recitativo by Rene Defossez followed by the 1st movement of Haydn's Trumpet Concerto. While the judges went went off to another room to make their decisions, the audience was treated to some impromptu entertainment by some wonderful singers and instrumentalists from Cowbridge School.

Flautist Olivia Chester (Cowbridge School) was awarded third prize for her rendition of part of Gounod's Concertino for Flute and Cantilena from Poulenc's Sonata for Flute and Piano. Second prize was awarded to the first of 3 harpists, Anwen Fardy (Ysgol Bro Morgannwg) who played the prelude from Partita number 3 by J S Bach followed by Viejo Zortzico by Jesus Guridi. The judging panel made up of Mary Noyes, Anthony Tarlton and Matthew Nash, awarded joint first place to 2 very talented young harpists, Caitlin Morris (Ysgol Iolo Morganwg) and Ioan Wardhaugh (Cowbridge School). Caitlin, who is only 10, played her 2 pieces with great skill and artistry - Presto by J S Bach and Etude by Felix Godefroid. Ioan played his 2 contrasting pieces Passacaille by Handel and Boundless by Kim Robertson with great expressiveness. Chief judge Anthony Tarlton congratulated these extremely talented young people on their performances and wished the first prize winners luck in the next round of the competition, which is due to take place in Neath in February 2015. Presentations were made to the winning contestants by Rotarian Mary Noyes, President of the Rotary Club of Llantwit Major.
