Presentation of achievement award to Mrs Tina Benfield - Llantwit in Bloom.
Entertainment and talk from harpist Caroline Greenwood.

On the evening of Monday 24th February, members and guests of the Llantwit Major Rotary club attended an eventful and interesting meeting at the Westhouse Hotel. The club made its annual presentation of the community achievement award to Mrs Tina Benfield, the chairman of Llanilltyd Fawr in Flower. This registered charity has been in existence since 1996, set up to improve the visual appearance of the Boverton Road shopping area. Since then the paved areas of the precinct have been refurbished completely to great effect, particularly through the addition of hanging baskets, planters, fixed garden troughs and cultivated areas, all of which looked particularly spectacular over the last 12 months. Daffodil bulbs have been planted throughout the town including around the Llantwit Major Comprehensive School. Tina was quick to express her gratitude to members of her committee and the the willing volunteers who have worked so hard to maintain the beautiful floral displays throughout the year. The organisation now makes small grants available to local businesses so that they can put floral displays outside their premises. President elect Mary Noyes said in making the presentation of a shield, framed certificate and cheque to Tina Benfield, that the town benefited greatly from the work of Llanilltyd Fawr in Flower.

Following the presentation,we were treated to a talk and recital from harpist Caroline Greenwood. Caroline gave us a 2,500 year history of the harp starting in Egyptian times when the harp was a musical development of a modified bow, up to the late 19th century when the pedal harp was developed. She illustrated her talk with pieces of music relevant to  particular periods of instrument development. She finished off her presentation by asking us to join in singing to her accompaniment of Calon Lan.
