A large group of Rotarians and their partners met at the West House Hotel, Llantwit Major to present a framed certificate to local comprehensive school student, Rowan Miller. Last summer Rowan had been selected to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership course held at Dolygaer in the Brecon Beacons. Similar courses for seventeen year olds are held around the world to encourage young people to develop their leadership skills. The local course is organised by Rotary but run by professionals at the outdoor centre.
Rotary Club President, Christine James welcomed Rowan, who is a year thirteen student, to the club. Rowan completes his school studies this summer but now lives in Aberdare and has to travel daily to Llantwit Major. To make his evening visit easier to arrange his mother, Carol Miller, also attended the dinner to listen to her son speak about his RYLA experiences before driving him home. Rowan explained how the various activities he had undertaken at Dolygaer had been very useful to him in is aim, ultimately, to complete a degree in Outdoor Activities at Carmarthen Trinity University. These had included orienteering, canoeing, swimming, caving and climbing. He had also had the experience of being appointed leader of one of the groups which went on to win that week
