Students from Llantwit Major and Cowbridge comprehensive schools competed in the local round of the Rotary Young Musicians competition organised by the Rotary Club of Llantwit Major. The competition was held in Cowbridge School on Tuesday 27th January 2009. The audience was treated to a varied programme of solo music played by pianist Jamie Clark, two cellists Ben Tarlton and Hannah Clist, violinist Iola Jenkins and clarinettist Hannah Ballinger. There were two winners, Ben Tarlton representing Llantwit Major, and Jamie Clark who represented Cowbridge. Ben played two pieces, the 4th movement of Elgar's Cello Concerto and the Dance of the Elves by David Popper. Jamie, an 18 year old pianist, played Chopin's well known Fantaisie-Impromptue in C# Minor followed by Sarabande from Debussy's Suite Pour le Piano. The judges Helena Braithwaite, Mary Noyes and Marilyn Davidson had a very difficult task in selecting the winners from such a strong field.
