On 25th August, members of Rotary Llanelli's Environment Team visited Swansea Environment Centre to look at some of the street furniture they have developed, for a project we are calling 'Refreshing Urban Planters'.
Members of the team were particularly impressed with the pond that fills from a roof downpipe and overspills to water a planter on each side. This helps to slow down water run-off and reduce flooding, as well as providing an attractive and wildlife-rich feature along the street.
Another planter is raised on small gabions, to allow for bin bags and food waste caddies to be stored underneath on collection day.
"The planters at different levels make a blank wall and pavement look really eyecatching. They can be planted with flowers to attract bees, herbs to eat, plants to smell sweet or even small fruit trees. A series of planters like this would look fantastic along any stretch of otherwise plant-less road. They can provide a diverse array of edible plants ready to be plucked and savoured whilst also cooling the air," comments Mike Goodfellow-Smith, Chair of the environment team.
Rotary Llanelli is applying for grants to pay for something similar in Llanelli. If you'd like to unleash your inner gardener and cooking skills with these lively planters in your neighbourhood, please contact Mike on 07966 283280 or using the contact form below.
