09.12.2010    Retired Optician Talks About Sailing

On Thursday 9th December Llandeilo Rotary Club welcomed Graham Evans retired optician from Llandeilo as their guest speaker.  Graham's passion for the past 22 years has been sailing.  His boat "Windana named after the Maori word meaning wind was moored at Poole in Dorset for 12 years during which time Graham and his friends spent their sailing time in the English channel with trips to the Channel Islands, France and further afield to Gibraltar and Morocco.  He related to Rotarians that his favourite port of call was the Channel Island of Alderney and recalled his visit to Morocco when presented with a mountain of paperwork to complete in order to enter the country.  A colleague produced a large pack of cigarettes whereupon the Customs official rubber stamped the documents in seconds!  However on returning to Gibraltar his boat was seized and impounded by the Customs and Police while it was searched for contraband!
In June 2010 Graham decided to leave Poole and return to Wales.  The leisurely journey took 3 weeks with ports of call including Dartmouth, Salcombe, Plymouth, Fowey, Newlyn, Isles of Scilly, Padstow and Lundy Island before reaching Swansea.  At the moment Graham is stilled moored at Swansea Marina but aims to sail around Southern Ireland in 2011.
