Dinner and speaker at the Baron

Wed, Feb 27th 2019 at 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Tonight we welcomed Di Emmett from Breast Cancer Haven in Hereford one of our chosen charities for this year.

We were delighted to welcome Di who gave us fascinating talk about the Breast Cancer Haven charity. There are 8 branches of the Haven in Hereford, Yorkshire, West Midlands, Cheltenham, London, Worcester and Essex. The charity offers a wide range of holistic treatments to aid the recovery from breast cancer. Di explained what is involved in the diagnosis and medical treatment of breast cancer, which can affect both men and women. She then outlined the steps taken by the Haven nurses and holistic practitioners to give women control over their lives during and after their treatments. After a general consultation, a plan of holistic treatments, group sessions, 1-on-1 chats is designed for the person affected by cancer. The first 7 sessions are free and then the woman ( or man ) pays as they proceed through their programme. Rotary member Cathy benefitted from the Haven's holistic treatments which include acupuncture, reiki, shiatsu, massage and more. Di inspired us with stories of women who had benefitted from the Haven's programmes and explained how she is working to encourage all the medical profession to refer breast cancer sufferers to the Haven. She also explained how she promotes the benefits of the treatments that the Haven offers for free. as well as the fundraising projects that the charity undertake to fund the Haven's work. The Haven gets no funding from the Government and the Hereford Haven alone requires £300,000 to provide the wide range of treatments they offer. You can read more about the Haven on their website.....President Ivan thanked Di for her excellent talk and said that we were proud to have donated £600 ( doubled to £1200 through the Big GIve ) and looked forward to doing more for the charity during the rest of the Rotary year.
