Dinner and speaker at the Baron

Wed, Apr 25th 2018 at 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Tonight we welcomed Kay Pritchard and Jane Roberts to talk about their experiences in Uganda.

This was a fascinating insight to the living and medical conditions in the western region of Uganda. Both Jane and Kay were trained as midwives but after retirement wanted to make a difference and were inspired to travel to Uganda for a month. They raised £4000 through professional channels and were introduced to Vicki Leech who works as an educational coordinator in Uganda. Kay and Jane told us of their journey with 92kg of medical supplies and then of the challenges that they met everyday during their 4 weeks stay. Jane was involved with the Kyaninga Centre for children with severe disabilities and was confronted by children affected in utreo by HIV, malaria and many other diseases. Kay was involved with a rural maternity unit and was faced with mothers for whom having children was a job not a joy, as 22% of children die in the first 28 days. Both Kay and Jane told us of the improvements they felt they made to the places and people they worked with, and were very keen to return in the near future. And not a penny of the money donated to them was wasted, as everything was given directly to the centres. An interesting and inspirational talk - many thanks to Chris for organising it!
