This was a very inspiring talk by Rotarian David from the Brynmawr Rotary Club. In 2005 a former member of the Rotary Club spotted a small article in a magazine advertising a water filter called a " Life Straw" manufactured in Denmark. He contacted the manufacturer, presented his thoughts to club members and the rest is history. You can read more about this HERE.
Each individual lifestraw ( seen in the photos in a jug of muddy water and also below) can filter 1000 litres of water, requires no power or spare parts and removes 99.999% of waterborne bacteria and 99.9% of waterborne protozoal parasites - this even includes the polio virus....David demonstrated using muddy water and it was very effective, utilising a physical filter to catch the debri and a fabric filter to remove the remaining contaminants. Cost per unit is £10, including postage, and is delivered directly to the people in need by the manufacturer....
There is also a family model ( 18,000 litres purified and costing £20 for family of five ) and a community model costing £200 and filtering over 100,000 litres ( equivalent to two swimming pools) in it's lifetime.
As always the distribution of this amazing items to those is need is always a challenge. Unfortunately Shelterbox no longer include them in their disaster relief boxes and the Rotary Club is trying to get the Salvation Army on board to increase the chances of those who have no fresh water being able to rebuild their lives....we wish them all the best in their endeavours and thank David for such an inspiring talk....
