International action
Our International Committee is responsible for global projects,
working to fundraise with those in our community for international causes and assiting the club to determine how funds
will be disbursed. We seek to help organisations that have close ties to people
in and around Brynmawr and where we have total confidence that the donation
will go directly to the people in need. In addition to supporting individual
projects selected by us, we contribute annually to The Rotary Foundation to allow them to tackle
large-scale global issues, for example the worldwide erradication of polio.
Example of supported projects include:
- Shelterbox - Supporting
disaster victims by providing the means to start rebuilding their lives.
Each box contains a tent shelter, tools, cooking equipment, bedding and
even toys for children. This organisation is supported by Rotary
International and one that we are proud to directly support with local
funds.
- Marys Meals - is a global
movement supported by people from many walks of life and different
backgrounds. Their mission is to enable people to offer their money,
goods, skills, time, or prayer, and through this involvement, provide the
most effective help to those suffering the effects of extreme poverty in
the world’s poorest communities.
Connect to Africa - We recently helped by giving Lifestraws and collecting sports bras, soccer boots and kits but projects that need support are
identified and the needs broken down its simple tasks, allowing everyone,
anywhere to do something special by helping out.

Jaipur Limb - What is the
Jaipur Limb? It’s an artificial leg, developed at the Mahaveer hospital in
Jaipur, India. The unique component is the Jaipur foot, a clever
combination of wood and various densities of rubber vulcanised into a
realistic looking brown foot. The Jaipur limb is hard-wearing and will
last for three or four years, longer if worn with a shoe. One of the major
differences between the Jaipur technology and western technology is the
cost – whereas a western limb will cost between £1,000.00 and £2,000.00, a
Jaipur limb can be made and fitted for as little as £30.00.
