Members of Brynmawr Rotary Club were delighted to welcome Josh, President-Elect of the Rotary Club of Maralal, Kenya, as our guest speaker at a recent meeting.
Josh gave a fascinating and thought-provoking insight into life in the Samburu region of northern Kenya and the vital work being undertaken by his Rotary club to improve the lives of local communities.
Maralal is situated in a remote part of sub-Saharan Kenya where access to clean water, healthcare and education remains a significant challenge. Josh explained how many women and girls still walk long distances each day to collect water for their families, highlighting the transformative impact that clean water projects can have on communities.
The Rotary Club of Maralal has been involved in a wide range of humanitarian initiatives over the years, including borehole installations, sanitation projects, support for schools, medical aid programmes, orphanage support and environmental conservation schemes. Through partnerships with Rotary clubs in Wales and beyond, many communities have benefited from improved access to essential services and opportunities.
One of the most exciting opportunities discussed was the potential development of a new water project that could provide clean water to more than 500 pupils and over 1,100 members of the wider community. Josh outlined how Rotary Foundation grants and other international funding streams could help make such a project a reality through collaboration between clubs.
Members were captivated by Josh's descriptions of Samburu culture and traditions, as well as the challenges faced by communities living in some of the most remote areas of Kenya. His stories illustrated both the hardships experienced by local people and the remarkable resilience, determination and sense of community that exists throughout the region.
The presentation also highlighted the importance of Rotary's global network. Through international partnerships, clubs can work together to deliver sustainable projects that create lasting change and improve lives around the world.
Brynmawr Rotary is committed to strengthening its international connections and exploring opportunities to work alongside the Rotary Club of Maralal on future projects. The potential partnership aligns strongly with Rotary's focus on providing clean water, improving sanitation and supporting education in developing communities.
We would like to thank Josh for taking the time to join us and share his experiences. His presentation was both inspiring and informative, leaving members with a greater understanding of the challenges faced by communities in northern Kenya and the difference Rotary can make when clubs work together across borders.
We look forward to developing this relationship further and exploring how Brynmawr Rotary can support future initiatives in Kenya.
