Dinner Meeting at the Heronston Hotel

Mon, Jun 8th 2026 at 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Guest speakers: Kathryn Stewart and fellow Trustee Fiona Evans of Care for Uganda (Motto "Hands Up not Hand Outs"). They spoke about the charity and their visit to Uganda in February 2026.

We were delighted to welcome Kathryn and Fiona, pictured above with President Paul, to our June dinner meeting. Kathryn is the daughter of our member Barrie Ball and his wife Stephanie.

Uganda is one of the world’s youngest countries, nearly half of the population is under 15 years old, meaning millions of children need access to education and opportunities every year.

Around 8 in 10 children aged 6–12 attend primary school, but only about 1 in 4 attend secondary school. Costs such as uniforms, books, transport and fees remain major barriers and UNICEF reports that education related costs account for around 60% of school dropouts.

Care for Uganda provides education, health and community support. Individual children are sponsored, including the costs of their schools fees and uniforms. Examples of health support are the motorbike ambulances, 8 of which have been provided to date. Community support includes improvements to basic hygiene, livestock provision and solar lamps that enable the children to do their homework and housework.

£22 a month helps change a community by supporting projects which include:

  • Providing families with breeding livestock, usually pigs but sometimes chickens or goats
  • Providing the materials to build energy saving stoves in schools and homes
  • Establishing nursery seedbeds to provide fruit trees
  • Providing community latrines
  • Training people to make compost to improve their crop yields
