Guest speaker: Peter Vaughan, HM Lord-Lieutenant of Mid Glamorgan

This evening we welcomed Peter Vaughan, the Lord-Lieutenant of Mid Glamorgan, as our guest speaker. Peter gave an interesting and entertaining talk about his life leading up his current position, to which he was appointed by Her Majesty The Queen in May 2019.

Peter retired from South Wales Police at the end of 2017 after more than 33 years in the police service. From Aberfan, he started his career with South Wales Police in 1984 and has served in each area of the force.

He became a Superintendent in 1997 and was the Divisional Commander for his home town of Merthyr Tydfil, later becoming head of the Community Safety Department and the Crime Operations Policy Unit. In July 2001, he became Chief Superintendent and Divisional Commander for Rhondda Cynon Taf.

In December 2003, he was appointed to the post of Assistant Chief Constable (ACC) for Wiltshire Police, with responsibility for all operational matters, in particular policing Divisions, Serious & Major Crime and the Operations Department. On returning to South Wales Police as an ACC in January 2007, he led the Criminal Justice and Community Safety Department as well as taking operational command for critical incidents and major events.

In 2010 Peter was appointed Chief Constable of South Wales Police. As Chief Constable he was a vice president of the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) and vice chair of the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC). He also chaired the Welsh Chief Officer Group, the Cwm Taf Regional Collaboration Board and the Welsh Joint Emergency Service Group.  He was also the national police lead for the service response to the Strategic Policing Requirement.

In 2013, Peter was awarded the Queen’s Police Medal in the New Years’ Honours. In January 2018 he became Professor of Policing and Security at the University of South Wales.

Thanks to Peter for his excellent talk were given by Phil Davies, a former colleague in South Wales Police.
