Rotakids Go Purple 4 Polio

The Leader of the Rotary Bridgend Youth Team, Rtn Catherine Williams and Rotarians William Williams and Alan Reeks visited Trelales Primary School to raise awareness of the Rotary End Polio Now campaign.

The school was presented with some 2,000 purple crocus corms as part of the Purple 4 Polio, Global Polio Eradication Initiative. The sale of the crocuses will be used to raise funds for its own projects and raise awareness for End Polio Now, Rotary’s global campaign to eradicate polio across the world.

The purple crocus is a symbol of Rotary’s worldwide campaign to eradicate polio, with its colour representing the dye used to mark the finger of a child who has been immunised. When a child receives their life-saving polio drops on mass polio immunisation days, their little finger is painted with a purple dye so it is clear they have received their polio vaccine.

By covering parks, gardens and green spaces with crocuses, Rotary is aiming to demonstrate how the humble crocus can symbolise a colourful splash of hope for a new beginning for children by eradicating polio and how working together whilst having fun can make a huge difference.

The eradication of polio is tantalisingly close and Rotary is continuing to work hard to raise funds and awareness to complete its global campaign.
