The idea of our Scottish member Bob Dunlop, Rotary Bridgend's first Burns Night Supper was a splendid occasion. On arrival we were greeted by the playing of piper John Campbell.
Rev. Mike Lewis then said the traditional Selkirk Grace;
Some hae meat and canna eat
And some wad eat that want it
But we hae meat and we can eat
And sae the Lord be thankit
This first course of our meal was followed by the piping in of the haggis, with Mike giving the address and toast to the haggis. Piper John then gave a wonderful recital of Scottish tunes followed by in Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau, which most of us had not heard on the bagpipes before! This was followed by the main course (haggis, neeps and tatties for many of us choosing that) and dessert.
Then came stories and traditional Scottish recitals, including the Immortal Memory, from Bob followed by a beautiful recital of Burns' songs by Sarah Morris, daughter of President Robin Bratton. Mike then made the toast to the Lassies with Bob's wife Lesley replying. Both were accompanied by a wee dram!
There was also Scottish dancing, Highland Fling and the Sword Dance for our more agile guests later in the evening.
A raffle with proceeds going towards fruit trees and weather stations for local schools was followed by Robin giving a vote of thanks to the organisers and the Golf Club for their wonderful hosting. And of course no Burns Night would be complete without the singing of Auld Lang Syne.
Many thanks in particular to Bob, Mike and Robin for making the night such an enjoyable and successful occasion.
