The September Ramble took ten walkers and two hounds to Newton. Before setting off we were shown around the inside of St John the Baptist’s Church at Newton by Liz Singer (husband of Andrew who is a Member of Rotary Porthcawl). With the tide going out, a walk along the shore line enabled the hounds to have an off the lead run. Entering the lower dunes from the beach, we took the path uphill to the highest points. From the top views across Ogmore, Porthcawl and the Bristol Channel to Somerset made the climb worth while.
On the return route the remains of the military shooting ranges could be seen. The ranges were used during the 1st and 2nd World Wars and up to 1967. A lot of the area is now overgrown and not visible but still worth a visit.
With a further Rotarian and wife joining us at the Jolly Sailor in Newton, a well deserved meal and liquid refreshment was enjoyed by all.
