Lifestyle Associated Liver Disease and the Iceberg Effect

Mon, Oct 5th 2020 at 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Guest Speaker Dr Andrew Yeoman, Consultant Hepatologist at the Royal Gwent Hospital

Dr. Yeoman trained in Wales, New Zealand and at King\'s College, London.   He was the main contributor to the Welsh Government\'s Document "The Wales Liver Plan", launched in late 2014.   He is currently the main Clinical Lead for the Delivery of the Plan on the Liver Disease Implementation Group (LDIG) with Early Detection being a key strategy in addition, he is also a Member of the Welsh Assembley\'s Cross Party Group on Liver Disease.

Dr. Yeoman provided us with detailed information of the state of Liver Disease in Wales and how these various lifestyle elements of:  Obesity (Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease - NAFLD);  Drug Misuse and Alcohol intake can affect our lives.   A change in the unit price for Alcohol was illustrated to have significant effect on decreasing cases of disease.   Some of the statistics were really food for thought for everyone.   Also, of the 750,000 Abnormal Liver Tests (LFTs) found in patients, about 3% (2,250) will progress to have serious conditions.

The very good news is that there are now seven Hepatologists in Wales, but the other side of the coin is that G.P.'s do not necessarily have all the tools in their hands to help with early diagnosis.  A new test has been devised to assist with this and more training will become available.
