Twenty-four pupils from Kirkcudbright Academy took part in the Young Musician competition sponsored by the Kirkcudbright Rotary Club. The evening was organised by music teacher Emma Irving with help from accompanist Sue St Joseph. All the pupils had clearly put in a great deal of practice in preparation for the competition and entertained the audience with a wonderful mix of singing and instrumental music on flute, piano, guitar, violin, and drums.
Winner of the Junior section was Bethany Crudgington on piano, playing ‘I Gioirni’ by composer Ludovico Einaudi.
Winner of the Senior Vocalist trophy was Beth Hutchison singing the powerful song ‘She used to be mine’ by Sara Bareilles.
Winner of the Senior Instrumentalist section was Thomas D’Haen on piano playing Scott Joplin’s jaunty ragtime piece ‘Maple Leaf Rag.’
The judge for the evening, Fiona Somerville from St Joseph’s College in Dumfries, complimented the students on the high standard of their performances and gave them her marking sheets which offered helpful comments for them to consider.
